Every so often a development comes along whose name, structure and footprint come together to create a project with integrity, one in which every detail has meaning and is not just tacked on to the development at a whim. Riverlight in SW8 is that development.Six striking pavilions rise up over London like a fleet of glorious otherworldly vessels. The glazed exteriors glister and sparkle with the light of the Thames, reflecting and refracting. How could Riverlight be called anything else? But then how could a development designed by Rogers, Stirk, Harbour & Partners (the team behind Neo-Bankside and The Merano Residence,) be anything less than a crystallised vision of architecture?A History of Riverlight
Riverlight while being a brand new development is already making history as one of the most sustainable and well thought out developments of modern times. Part of the largest regeneration of a single area ever seen in the UK, Nine Elms is four times bigger than Canary Wharf.
Seemingly economically implausible, 75% of Riverlight is dedicated to open space, allowing every apartment to benefit from the maximum daylight, privacy and attractive views. Yet not an inch of space is compromised or given over to architectural ego making this a sound investment for future generations.
Water and light are recurring themes throughout the development, with specially commissioned works of art to reiterate the design narrative of the architects and St James’ wider cultural ideologies. Those being; that construction and landscaping can enhance the physical and economic well-being of a town’s inhabitants and that the environment and buildings are not mutually exclusive dichotomies. From the very outset the developer’s St James, consulted with both the local community and cultural and creative practitioners to deliver an area that can be enjoyed by residents and visitors alike yet always maintaining exclusivity for those seeking seclusion in the midst of an insomnolent metropolis.
Artists Simon and Tim Bloor invite people to interact with sculptural trails using natural and man-made materials to create a variety of stepping stones and areas to be used for fitness and activity or just people watching.
Peter Newman’s, Sky-station is a flying –saucer-shaped seat, its smooth pebble-like contours both natural and yet not of this world. It beckons you to sit back and watch the world go by, literally, as clouds scuttle across its surface.
More subtly, Kate Davis and David Moore collaborated to create an artwork that plays on the river’s reflective qualities. A ring of birch trees forms a dappled glade and silver leaves hidden in their branches glitter in the breeze and respond to the change in the light.
In a whimsical mood, one might almost feel like a child stepping through the doors of Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory and bursting into a rendition of a world of pure imagination! Am I sounding unrealistic? Then read about living and investing in Riverlight…
Living & Investing In Riverlight
Six pavilions make up the Riverlight development each with its own distinctive band of colour across exterior surfaces providing a spectral dash of colour across the riverfront.
Each apartment has been finished to a high specification with attention to detail that its world-class architects and developers are renowned for. Think Siemens kitchen appliances and Villeroy Boch bathrooms. Underfloor heating provides one of the most economical forms of heating while the practical, yet attractive interior surfaces ensure durability.
Floor to ceiling windows allow daylight to flood each apartment and the sophisticated ‘inflexion outdoor terraces’ maximise the panoramic views while minimising being overlooked by neighbouring properties.
The footplates show that every inch of space has been used to benefit the layout with no awkward, useless niches or corners that add price per square foot and yet actually reduce space! Apartments range from; suites of around 510sqft, to three-bedroom apartments of approximately 1900sqft (excluding the even more spacious duplex penthouses). Riverlight has been designed to cater for every lifestyle ensuring a diverse mix of private residents.
The entrance to the main pavilion plays with the perceptions of space and light. The double-height lobby encourages you to take in the magnificent architecture and the dedicated concierge service provides unparalleled five-star services. However, it is the exclusive resident’s facilities that upgrade this from a standard high-end development into a Wonka-esque vision, albeit a much more grown-up one.
A library, business facilities and residents lounge encapsulate modern ways of working that no longer require you to be tied to your desk at the office yet at the same time provides respite from lonely home working. (Though we suspect Riverlight residents are a bit beyond setting up a business from the kitchen table, many may well have started out that way!)
The holistic spa, swimming pool, and state of the art gymnasium are for residents who exercise their bodies as well as their minds. And in a simple yet thoughtful nod to environmental sustainability and those less agile, a car share service, bicycle station and courtesy bus to Vauxhall Station (which is no more than a few minutes’ walk away for sprightly walkers) provide a way of maximising their transport options while reducing the need for individual cars.
In addition to all the above is the virtual golf course and a fully digital private cinema that provide an insight into how the developers envisage Riverlight residents to pass their time. Understanding that playing hard is just as important as working hard. Riverlight is very much dedicated to lifestyle activities and St James’ commitment to cultural place-making evidences this.
The bars and restaurants opening within the development prove that Riverlight is not just a place to lay one’s head. Nor is it just a series of disconnected buildings with an obligatory water feature. Riverlight is set to become a residential and commercial complex that caters for those seeking the most from their environments and expects the best cultural offering to be part of their landscape. And as for the water feature? Well, if the River Thames won’t suffice then we are lost for words!
Riverlight, Vauxhall & Beyond
Residents of Riverlight are a sophisticated, creative intelligentsia that want the best that London has to offer and for it to be within easy reach. Riverlight has it all. Purchasers of Riverlight are part of a club that keeps London at the forefront of global cities; economically, commercially and culturally.
On a day-to-day level Vauxhall already offers the necessities for everyday life including a doctors, supermarkets, dentists and a fantastic transport hub, but with the arrival of Riverlight and the continued regeneration of Vauxhall and the whole new Nine Elms area, more bars, restaurants and leisure pursuits will follow.
That’s means anyone buying in Nine Elms right now may wonder just what the area has to offer, but if you are not a leader or visionary then maybe Riverlight isn’t the right development for you?
With excellent transport links into the City, West End and Canary Wharf as well as trains to all of London’s main airports and to Surrey and the South Coast, Vauxhall provides a central hub for city dwellers, second home owners and the international jet set.
At ground level, Vauxhall is famed for its diverse nightlife, and exemplifies everything that gives London a worldwide reputation for cosmopolitan living. However if you’re looking for uber-cool? Vauxhall is too self-assured for that.
A brief look around the area will confirm this. With the wittily named VauxWall climbing centre, a new Damien Hirst Gallery about to open, the quaintly popular Vauxhall City Farm and the community run Bonnington Square Café, Vauxhall clearly dances to its own beat. Largely ignoring chain bars and restaurants, SW8 residents embrace the quirky, diverse, independent venues.
In Vauxhall expect to rub shoulders with glamorous drag queens, ambitious entrepreneurs, up and coming artists and affluent media types. Its bars and cafes frequented by those who know what they want and how to get it.
Just like the residents of Riverlight.
