A History of One Tower Bridge
With one of the most famous addresses in London, One Tower Bridge residents will wake up every day to see the magnificent bascules of Tower Bridge rising slowly to allow boats and ships to pass through.
Constructed over 8 years from 1886 – 1894 Tower Bridge was like many innovative constructions both admired and derided in equal measure. Designed by Sir Horace Jones, Tower Bridge provided a new crossing for the increasingly populated parts of East London whose businesses required north/south connections but at the same time, a fixed bridge could not be built as tall ships used the Pool of London; situated between London Bridge and the Tower of London.
Tower Bridge was the answer with its magnificent granite and Portland stone clad towers housing some of the 11,000 tons of steel that make up the framework.
Its two high-level walkways proved instantly popular but as with many architectural ideals were somewhat abused by prostitutes and pickpockets who found the dimly lit staircases a handy place to do business.
Today the walkways of Tower Bridge are home to exhibitions and displays with the towers now being a tourist attraction of a more reputable nature.
While the erection of Tower Bridge is to be lauded, there was one casualty of the construction that has now become part of a hidden London no longer accessible to people. Tower Subway – the entrance of which lay very close to the One Tower Bridge site – was an underground tunnel originally designed to take a cable car underneath the Thames. The cable car itself proved too costly and so the tunnel simply became an underground walkway with a toll of ½ d to pass through but the new toll-free walkways of Tower Bridge saw the demise of the tunnel and it is now used as a water mains.
However one legacy of the Tower Subway was its construction method which was later used to build the City and South London Railway, the world’s first underground railway.
